That being said, the beauty of the Silverado 1500 is that you can also make it into a hardworking truck that’s perfect for getting through the week or a trail-ready beast designed to take you off-road on the weekend. Off-road performance, in particular, is what we’re looking at today in the form of the two Trail Boss trims available for the 2024 Silverado 1500. These are off-road-ready versions of two other trims, giving you great features inside along with incredible capability out on the trail, so let’s take a closer look at what they offer and the differences between them.
What Is a Trail Boss Model?
The first thing we should get into is understanding exactly what we’re talking about when it comes to the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss models. To start with, let’s note that Chevy offers three different off-road focused trims for the Silverado 1500, which tells us how much they care about those of us who are interested in taking our trucks onto the trail. The high-end option is the ZR2, which is undeniably an incredible beast for going off-road, but it also comes in at a price point that puts it out of reach for some drivers. So, if you want to hit the trail in a truck that goes easier on your wallet, then a Trail Boss is the way to go.
When you talk about a Trail Boss, there are actually two different models that use this name; both are off-road-focused versions of other trims. We’ll get into their differences in a moment, but they share features and engineering designed to let them go further off-road. First and foremost, both Trail Boss models come with a Z71 suspension that includes a two-inch factory lift for enhanced ground clearance and capabilities on the trail. We’d say this is the defining feature of the Trail Boss and one of the biggest reasons many people choose them over other trim levels for the Chevy Silverado 1500.
Both of these Trail Boss models are only available with four-wheel drive (4WD), which makes sense since they’re designed as off-road trucks. You get Hill Descent Control to help maintain braking and smooth speed while going downhill, which is perfect for rough conditions and hilly trails. They have a two-speed Autotrac transfer case with 4WD Hi mode for slippery conditions, including sand and snow, as well as 4WD Lo mode for low-speed traction on steep grades or deep sand and snow where you need enhanced capabilities. The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 Custom Trail Boss
Based on the Custom trim level for the Silverado 1500, this is the most accessible option if you’re looking for a great full-size, off-road truck on a tight budget. The Custom is a terrific overall choice for a solid truck at a lower price, and the Trail Boss version carries many of these features while making it perfect for heading off-road. You get 18-inch high-gloss Black wheels on this model, which are wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires that are perfect for exceptional grip in rough conditions. This model has body-color front and rear bumpers, cargo bed LED lighting, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, and a standard tailgate with EZ Lift assist and power lock and release for ease of use.
We should note that the interior is a bit more scaled-down than what some drivers prefer—if you like a simpler interior without as many bells and whistles, however, then you’ll love this one. The Custom Trail Boss features a seven-inch Infotainment display with wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a six-speaker sound system so you can take your favorite tunes with you onto the trail. It has a 3.5-inch monochromatic Driver Information Center display and a six-gauge instrumentation cluster that ensures you have the information you need without distracting you with a lot of extras.
In terms of comfort, this model has cloth seating inside, so you don’t have to worry about sticking to vinyl seats while you’re heading off-road. There’s a 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar, so you’ll be comfortable even if it takes a few hours on the road to get to a trailhead, plus a four-way front-passenger seat. You get power windows and door locks, along with remote start and remote keyless entry, so it’s still easy to get into the Custom Trail Boss and hit the road each day. With both single-zone climate control and cruise control included, this is a fine option for your daily commute in Pelham and going off-road on the weekend.
The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss
In much the same way that the LT trim builds on what the Custom model offers, the LT Trail Boss gives you enhanced comfort and tech features beyond what you find on the Custom Trail Boss. We should note that both of these Trail Boss models start with the TurboMax engine that provides 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. While both trims have a 3.0L diesel engine available, the LT Trail Boss lets you choose an available 6.2L V8 engine with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, which you can’t get on the Custom Trail Boss. This is an amazing engine for driving around Pelham or heading off-road, so it could be worth the higher price all on its own.
On the outside, the LT Trail Boss has similar 18-inch wheels with the same MT Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires. This model has High gloss Black painted mirror caps and door handles for an added touch of style that sets it apart from the Custom Trail Boss. Once you look inside this truck, however, you’ll find massive differences, starting with the gorgeous 13.4-inch Premium Infotainment display with Google built-in. This is paired with a 12.3-inch Driver Information Center that absolutely pops and is hard to beat if you’re someone who enjoys the latest in automotive tech. A six-speaker sound system remains standard on this model, along with cloth seating and a 10-way power driver’s seat with a four-way front passenger seat.
This LT Trail Boss has dual-zone automatic climate control to help keep you and your passengers more comfortable, which is something we always appreciate. You can take the interior of this model to another level with available packages and options, such as the Leather package that gives you front leather seating and Up-level Rear Seats with more storage for you and your passengers to utilize. The Convenience Package II adds a rear sliding power window, increased towing functionality thanks to Chevy’s Hitch Guidance system with Hitch View that makes connecting to a trailer easier, and a seven-speaker Bose Premium sound system that provides incredible audio when driving around Pelham.

What More Can a Truck Offer?
As you can see, the Trail Boss models are both excellent options if you’re looking for a Chevy Silverado 1500 to take off-road, but the ZR2 is more than you want. The ZR2 isn’t just luxury and tech upgrades, however, since it comes with an enhanced off-road suspension featuring Multimatic DSSV dampers for incredible trail capabilities, so keep that in mind. Ultimately, the Trail Boss models both deliver terrific performance when you head off-road, so they are equally rewarding options in this regard. The right one for you comes down to the extra features and options you’re looking for with your truck—the LT Trail Boss provides more luxury, comfort, and technology, but the Custom Trail Boss keeps things simple and has a lower price. They’re both excellent trucks for daily driving and hitting the trail, giving you a multitude of options designed to perfectly meet your needs.
