As you might expect from a truck born two decades ago, amenities and tech features are pretty limited, although leather-trimmed seating and a six-disc CD changer (remember those?) were available. Of particular note was the available Z71 Off-Road suspension—a name that has remained an important part of the Colorado ever since. The 2007 Chevy Colorado Still part of the first generation for the Colorado, the 2007 model saw a minor revision, including a facelift to update its curb appeal. Perhaps more importantly, however, this update included two new engines: a 2.9L I-4 that offered 185 hp and an advanced 3.7L option with 242 hp for boosted performance. You can see that both of these engines were more powerful than the ones the Colorado launched with, and these kinds of innovations and improvements can be seen throughout its impressive history. In addition to its updated grille, new paint colors for the exterior were offered for 2007, along with new wheels and other options. The 2013/2014 Chevy Colorado The most noteworthy aspect about the 2013 and 2014 models of the Chevy Colorado is that they don't exist. Although the Colorado had proven itself pretty popular early on, sales had been on a bit of a decline in the years leading up to this point. Even updates for the 2007 and 2009 model years weren't enough to boost those numbers back up, and Chevy realized they needed to give the Colorado an injection of excitement with a full redesign. This took some time to develop, so you won't find this truck from 2013 or 2014, but it made a huge splash when it returned the following year... The 2015 Chevy Colorado For the 2015 model year, Chevy launched an all-new second generation of the Colorado with a complete redesign that took some visual inspiration from the full-size Silverado. New materials and superior engineering help make the frame of the 2015 model significantly lighter than previous ones, with high-strength steel to ensure it can still handle anything you throw at it. It launched with a 2.5L I-4 engine that offered 200 hp, with an available 3.6L V6 engine that boosted performance with 305 hp; both were offered with a six-speed automatic transmission. A five-speed manual transmission was available for the standard engine, so keep that in mind if you're looking for a used truck with a manual. With this second generation, Chevy slightly expanded on the trim selection with a Work Truck (WT) with more features, an LT with improved standard features, and a Z71 off-road-focused trim level. Since these models were released less than a decade ago, it's pretty easy to find plenty of them in their diverse trims and equipped with all kinds of available features. One thing to note is that a diesel engine quickly became available for the Colorado but not until the 2016 model year, so if you're interested in a 2.8L Duramax I-4 turbo-diesel engine with 369 lb-ft of torque, then you'll want to look at a later model. The 2017 Chevy Colorado Since the fully redesigned Colorado launched for the 2015 model year, you won't find huge changes on 2017 models, with one important exception to note: the 2017 Colorado offered an all-new ZR2 trim level. While the Z71 is a great choice for heading to your favorite campsite or dealing with a lot of gravel and dirt roads, the ZR2 is the peak off-road experience for the Colorado. This first appearance included a wider track, a factory-installed two-inch suspension lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and much more. If you're looking to do some serious off-roading in a used Chevy Colorado, then you definitely want to look for 2017 or later models of the ZR2 trim for the best trail performance possible. The 2021 Chevy Colorado For the 2021 model year, Chevy gave the Colorado a facelift and update that includes a new grille, front fascia, and tailgate for an improved overall look. A dealer-installed one-inch leveling kit also becomes available starting with this model year, along with new 17-inch wheels found on the WT and Z71 trims. The 2024 Silverado 1500's list of trims will remain as it has been, as no trim received a meaningful deviation over the last few years, but the ever-popular and more recent ZR2 trim is confirmed to be making an appearance for the third consecutive year in a row. That's enough about some of the smaller details; let's take a closer look into what you'll be experiencing with a new 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500. Familiar Performance (Yes, This Is a Good Thing) Hear us out: performance remains the same with the 2024 Silverado 1500 as last year's model, but this isn't a bad thing. Not only does the turbocharged I-4 engine accompany the two returning V8 engines, but the turbo-diesel engine makes a return, too—which is a bigger deal than many think. There are still a healthy amount of truck drivers who prefer diesel-powered engines, and the Silverado 1500 can be fitted with one, while its largest competitor—the Ford F-150—ditched diesel years back to shift focus onto their hybrid powertrain. This year's main difference isn't in data but with naming, as the 2.7L turbocharged I-4 engine has been rebranded into a TurboMax engine. Ultimately, it's the same engine that took over the base role since the 4.3L V6 engine was discontinued in the 2022 model. This new standard TurboMax creates 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 9,500 lbs and a payload capacity of 2,260 lbs. While the TurboMax engine provides the lowest towing capacity of the four powertrains, it has the best payload capacity. As for the two V8s, the 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 engines are both paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission instead of the eight-speed automatic transmission that's matched with the base TurboMax engine. The smaller of the two V8 engines produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and the possibility of towing up to 11,300 lbs. A towing capacity of 11,300 lbs isn't even the best the Silverado 1500 has to offer. If you purchase either the 6.2L V8 or the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel I-6 engines, you'll have a maximum towing capacity of 13,300 lbs. This is a percentage differential of 40% between the strongest two engines against the base one. The 6.2L V8 engine has more horsepower than the Turbo-Diesel, at 420 hp against 305 hp, but the Turbo-Diesel engine has a greater torque output, at 495 lb-ft of torque, compared to the V8's 460 lb-ft of torque. With the 2024 Silverado 1500, the Turbo-Diesel engine can be equipped on the off-roading-ready ZR2 trim. Performance remains one of the Silverado 1500's strong suits, even compared to other modern-day trucks, so for the performance to stay the same this year isn't a bad thing. Class-Leading Cargo Space The 2024 Chevy Silverado keeps its status as one of the most cargo-friendly pickup trucks you can get. How much space does the Silverado 1500 give you? Like most full-size trucks, there is a trio of bed sizes you can choose from—but what's special about the Silverado 1500 is that all three of its bed sizes are larger than other trucks. Most notably, the Silverado 1500 has more cargo space than the F-150, which is Chevy's chief competitor in the pickup truck segment. Not only does the Chevy Silverado 1500 have significantly more cargo space than the F-150, but it manages this by only incrementally increasing the length of the truck. What it shows is that Chevy's engineers know how to best make use of the space they have to work with—but how much of a difference are we talking about? The smallest bed size for the F-150 is five feet, five inches long, which is only three inches shorter than the Silverado's five-foot, eight-inch bed, but the bigger difference lies in how the Silverado's smallest bed offers 62.9 cu.ft. of space instead of the 52.8 cu.ft. available on the Ford F-150. The difference in cargo space is 19%, but the Silverado's truck bed is only 4.5% longer. See what we mean? The same kind of differences can be seen when moving up to the two larger beds: the six-foot, five-inch median and eight-foot long beds for the Ford F-150 contrast to the six-foot, six-inch median and eight-foot, two-inch long beds for Chevy's full-size pickup. The two formers may only be 1% different in length, but Chevy's truck has 15% more cargo space in this configuration: Chevy's 71.7 cu.ft. against Ford's 62.3 cu.ft. Similarly, the eight-foot, two-inch long bed is only 2% longer than the F-150's eight-foot long bed, but the Silverado 1500 again has 15% more cargo than the F-150 if you opt for the longest bed. A Few Changes for 2024 The 2024 Chevy Silverado keeps with the best of the old but also fine-tunes the experience elsewhere and, in some cases, tweaks the base-level experience to fit better in the modern landscape. An example of this is in features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, now coming standard with the Silverado 1500.
