The Best Used Chevy Models to Beat the Daily Commute

A white 2020 Chevy Sonic RS is shown from the front driving through a city.

Every day, a battle is waged on the city streets. It’s not a physical confrontation or one that involves conventional weapons, but the struggle of getting from point A to point B. This battle is called the daily commute. To win this struggle, a vehicle that’s cost-effective, reliable, and fuel-efficient is what’s needed to declare a decisive victory. These are often defined as commuter vehicles, and of all the brands that currently exist on the marketplace, it’s Chevy that has the best offerings for the commuting consumer. Here at Edwards Chevrolet 280, we have many vehicles in stock for those who are looking to save some extra pennies on their next vehicle purchase.

We’re not just a used Chevrolet dealer; we’re a location that believes in offering the very best for our customers. In order to better help our customers find the best vehicle for their commute, we've put together a list of examples of some of the models you may find on our used lot. Though you may not be able to find these options exactly, this is just an idea of what is out there, and our sales team would be happy to find you a model that is comparable to one of these.

2020 Chevy Sonic

Many drivers who commute to work do so on their own. When it comes to going the distance on a limited budget, look no further than the 2020 Chevy Sonic to provide a cost-effective commute that’s reliable day after day. With the vehicle's lower-than-average cost and the depreciation that’s taken place since 2020, finding one for an affordable price is easy. With a peppy 1.4L four-cylinder engine and an efficient six-speed automatic transmission, you’ll also have the benefit of 26 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined. Perfect for the daily grind and affording you peace of mind, courtesy of the five-star overall safety rating granted by the NHTSA.

2019 Chevy Volt

Here’s a question that a few of our readers might be wondering—is it possible to have a commuter vehicle that’s both effective at limiting trips to the pump but still allowing you to arrive at any destination in style? The answer to this is a resounding “yes.” In the past, you might have had to sacrifice aesthetics to have a vehicle that possessed conservative fuel consumption, but those two worlds were blended seamlessly in the form of the 2019 Chevy Volt. Praised by many as one of the best plug-in hybrids to hit the market early on, the Volt offered up to 53 miles of electric-only range. With its sleek look and abundance of features, you’ll have no trouble being comfortable and having all of the desired amenities when you’re behind the wheel. The estimates from the EPA are more than favorable, as they calculated savings of $5,500 over a five-year period on fuel costs.

2018 Chevy Bolt EV

Everyone needs a hero, and when it comes to the office carpool, you have an opportunity to be one, thanks to the 2018 Chevy Bolt EV. While the concept of the SUV going electric is no longer a new one, Chevy hit the ground running when they brought about the Bolt EV. Proving that comfortable seating and substantial cargo space could be had in an SUV that was fully electric, the Bolt EV is free of fossil fuel consumption and possesses a full range of up to 238 miles. This means a single charge can last for one whole week of driving, and the only need for a trip to the gas station is to fill up on nachos. With 56.6 available cubic feet of storage space, you’ll have no trouble taking it all with you on your many travels.

2018 Chevy Spark

For the city dweller, the daily commute can be a stress-inducing activity, and even the most experienced drivers describe it as an arduous task. City driving tends to involve a lot of stop-and-go traffic, crowded streets, and above all else, the constant worry about what the other drivers you might be sharing the road with are doing. Luckily, this commute can be easily managed courtesy of a small vehicle that can weave in and out of the haphazard situations you might find yourself in. The 2018 Chevy Spark is just such a vehicle.

This little hatchback has a 1.4L four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. (Though a CVT transmission is also available and is just as efficient in the stop-and-go traffic patterns that one encounters in the city.) You might be surprised also to learn that while the Spark was not a hybrid, it was just as efficient in cutting fuel costs, with its combined 33 MPG. Broken down, you get 29 MPG in the city and an astonishing 39 MPG on the highway. For a solo commuter who calls the city home, the Spark is a vehicle too good to pass up.

2020 Chevy Malibu

Continuing with gasoline-powered vehicles that are inexpensive regarding fuel costs, the 2020 Chevy Malibu is a practical choice that won’t disappoint when you’re traveling from home to the office and anywhere else in between. The far-reaching lineage of the Chevy Malibu needs little introduction, and although the modern-day ford door sedan might not be your Malibu SS with a 454 big block, it’s just as efficient.

A four-door sedan is somewhat of a rarity these days with the SUV boom in full force, but the Malibu proves that this option is still a practical choice for the average consumer. A 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder with a CVT offers up 29 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined. On average, you’ll have the ability to go 500 miles in between fill-ups, and the EPA estimates fuel savings of $1,000 over a five-year period. Sedans are usually cheaper to insure than other vehicles, and Chevy’s reputation for their fleet maintaining longevity is undoubtedly well known.

We end our comprehensive list of used daily commuting vehicles with the virtues of diesel. Of course, Chevy and diesel share a solid companionship, as the company's engines have been known for giving vehicles such as the Silverado 1500 an edge in terms of torque and towing prowess. But this technology has benefited the sedan as well. The 2018 Chevy Cruze offered up ample storage space, and thanks to its turbo-diesel engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy was elevated beyond expectations. 31 MPG in the city, 47 MPG on the highway, and 37 MPG combined prove that diesel fuel is still highly effective in a marketplace dominated by EVs.

Let's take a look at the full Chevy lineup so you can see what's out there and get a sense of which one will best meet your needs. more Great Chevy Sedans The Chevy Spark First, we have the smallest model Chevy offers and the most budget-friendly vehicle on the market: the subcompact Chevy Spark. This is a little hatchback that is absolutely perfect if you're looking for something that will go easy on your wallet. Chevy recently brought the Spark to an end, so 2022 is the last model year you'll find for it, but a used Spark is even less expensive and still a fantastic choice. The Chevy Bolt EV If you're interested in an all-electric model, then the Bolt EV is a terrific way to go. This is also a subcompact hatchback, though it's not quite as diminutive as the Spark, with two rows of seating and a spacious rear cargo area. The Bolt EV is perfect if you've been considering trying out an electric vehicle, but you're concerned about the high prices on them from other companies. The Chevy Malibu For anyone looking for a classic sedan experience on the road, you can't beat the Chevy Malibu and its years of fantastic models. The Malibu is a midsize sedan, which makes it perfect for small families, singles, or couples looking for a car that is a great vehicle for daily use. The Malibu is small enough to make it perfect for getting around town but still big enough inside to ensure everyone is comfortable and to give you plenty of trunk space. The Chevy Camaro If you're interested in a powerful sports car, then Chevy has you covered with two options, starting with the gorgeous Camaro. This is the quintessential example of a traditional sports car, with plenty of power packed into it to get your heart racing. Best of all, the starting price on the Camaro is quite low despite its performance, making it a very accessible pre-owned option for you to enjoy. The Chevy Corvette For a truly unique and unbelievable driving experience, there's the Corvette with its modern mid-engine design. This is a sports car that offers incredible power that leaves pretty much every other American performance vehicle in its dust. The mid-engine design delivers truly remarkable power that will put you back in your seat and keep a smile on your face every second you're behind the wheel and strapped into its cockpit. The used market is a fantastic option for those looking to enjoy this iconic car's performance without paying a new model price. Fantastic Chevy SUVs The Chevy Trax Chevy has one of the most diverse and impressive selections of SUVs in the auto industry, ensuring that there's something here for everyone. It starts with the Trax, a subcompact crossover model that's small enough to fit into any lifestyle. No matter how much space you have for your next vehicle, the Trax can squeeze into it while still giving you SUV functionality and a spacious interior for you to enjoy. The Chevy Trailblazer Next up, the Chevy Trailblazer is also a subcompact crossover model, though it's a bit larger than the Trax. This added size gives you more room inside for your passengers and for any cargo you need to load up. If you're looking for something small, but the Trax doesn't quite give you enough room for what you need, then you should check out the Trailblazer. The Chevy Bolt EUV The Bolt EV isn't the only all-electric model in Chevy's lineup – the Bolt EUV is a battery-electric crossover model built on the same platform as the Bolt EV. This gives you the functionality and design of a crossover SUV but with an all-electric powertrain that you will surely enjoy. Although Chevy has many more electric vehicles coming soon, the Bolt EV and EUV have been their flagships in this market. The Chevy Equinox If you're looking for something a bit larger than what we've seen so far, then you owe it to yourself to take a good look at the Equinox. This compact crossover model is bigger than the Trax or Trailblazer, but it's far from overbearing. The Equinox has been a favorite among many drivers for years, making it a great option whether you're looking for a brand-new or a pre-owned vehicle. The Chevy Blazer Next up, we have the Blazer, which is also a midsize SUV that's designed to give you more options when you're looking for your next ride. The Blazer is very similar in size to the Equinox but it has some upgraded features for you to enjoy, including excellent technology and comfort options inside. This can make the Blazer cost a bit more than the Equinox, but it's a great choice if you want modern amenities and it fits your budget. The Chevy Traverse The Traverse is a three-row SUV that's larger in size than what we've looked at so far, but it's far from the largest model Chevy offers. If you're looking for something for a growing family and need seating for six or seven people, then the Traverse can be the perfect option. Despite its large size, this is still a very budget-friendly choice, which is why so many families have looked to it as the perfect solution for their needs. The Chevy Tahoe The first of two full-size SUVs from Chevy, the Tahoe is the smaller of the two options, but it's far from demure. This is a large and powerful SUV with fantastic engines designed to make driving it feel rewarding and responsive. If you're looking for a vehicle that can fit eight people and keep everyone comfortable, then this is a great pick. The Chevy Suburban Finally, we have the largest option from Chevy, the full-size and impressive Suburban, which is even bigger than the Tahoe. We'll be honest: the Suburban is an absolute beast, but that makes it the perfect choice if you're looking for something large and in charge. If you have room for it in your life and need the space it delivers, then the Suburban could be perfect for you. Hardworking Chevy Trucks The Chevy Colorado Midsize trucks have become incredibly popular in recent years and there's no denying the Colorado is the favorite of many drivers. This is a great way to go if you're looking for a pickup with solid power and capability, while keeping things on the smaller side. The Colorado is also an incredible option for going off-road, so keep this one in mind before hitting the trail. The Chevy Silverado 1500 If you're looking for a full-size truck, you can't go wrong with the legendary Silverado 1500 and everything it brings to the road. The Silverado has remarkable power and capability packed into it thanks to a number of industry-leading available engines. Whether you're looking for a truck with a diesel engine to help you get your job done or need something for camping and taking a boat with you to the lake, the Silverado can deliver. The Chevy Silverado HD Series Of course, if you need something with even more power than the light-duty Silverado 1500, then there are the Silverado HD models. The Silverado 2500 HD gives you greater capability than the 1500 and offers robust performance, while the 3500 HD takes towing potential to the next level. If you're looking to do some serious gooseneck towing to haul a massive trailer or camper behind you, the Silverado 3500 HD can't be beaten.
