History
Edwards Chevrolet: A Century of Service in Birmingham
For more than a century, Edwards Chevrolet has been a cornerstone of Birmingham’s automotive community. Founded in 1916, our family-owned dealership has grown alongside the city, weathered challenges, and celebrated triumphs, all while staying true to our mission of treating customers like family.
Our Legacy: A Timeline
1916 – The Beginning
William Sterling Edwards Jr. invests his savings of $6,000 to open the Edwards Motor Company on 21st Street South. He secures a contract with Chevrolet Motor Company, making us one of the earliest Chevrolet dealers in the state of Alabama.
1920s – Growth and Assembly
Chevrolet vehicles arrive in Birmingham by rail in separate pieces, with frames and bodies shipped separately. Edwards’ team assembles them locally before delivery to customers. In 1928, the dealership relocated to a new facility on 3rd Avenue North, closer to Birmingham’s growing business district.
1930s–1940s – Hard Times, Steady Service
During the Great Depression and World War II, new car production slowed to a crawl. Edwards Chevrolet remained strong by focusing on parts, repairs, and service for the drivers of Birmingham. By 1944, the dealership had established its main showroom on 3rd Avenue North, the same downtown location we proudly occupy today.
1950s – A New Name
Edwards Motor Company officially becomes Edwards Chevrolet, reflecting its deep connection to America’s most iconic brand.
1962 – Second Generation Leadership
Sterling’s son, Leon W. Edwards, takes the helm, guiding the dealership through decades of change. Under Leon’s leadership, Edwards Chevrolet expanded and earned a reputation as one of Birmingham’s most trusted car dealers.
2000s – Expansion to Highway 280
Edwards Chevrolet added a second location on Oporto Madrid Boulevard and later relocated it in 2007 to U.S. Highway 280, across from The Village at Lee Branch, bringing the “Chevyman” experience to more Birmingham families.
2016 – A Century of Service
Edwards Chevrolet proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary, marking a century of dedication to customers through world wars, economic ups and downs, and the ever-changing automotive industry.
2020s – A New Era
Following Leon Edwards’ passing in 2021, the dealership continues under family leadership with the support of longtime employees. Today, under the guidance of Lee Edwards and Kevin Liles (who began his career here as a porter and now serves as principal dealer), Edwards Chevrolet continues to thrive with two locations, more than 250 employees, and thousands of loyal customers.
Why It Matters
For over a century, Edwards Chevrolet has been more than just a dealership; it’s been a trusted partner for Birmingham drivers. Our story is proof that with dedication, family values, and a focus on customer care, a business can stand the test of time.
